Creating an Effective Resume'

Putting together a resume' (CV) that will get you the result you are hoping for does not happen by accident. It requires a resume' that has the proper information located in the proper place.

What you do not want to include in the resume' is personal information that is not pertinent to job application. Do not include:
1. Address
2. Phone numbers
3. Social Security number
4. Contact information of friends or relatives.

Some of this information will be needed, such as contact information for the applicant so they know how to reach you for employment. But this information should be submitted under separate cover to be kept descrete.

If you have more than one page, keep the essential and pertinent information on the first page. The management personnel that will be reading and digesting the information in your resume' will make a first pass through a stack of resume's to extract the resume's that look promising. If what they are looking for does not jump out at them on the first page your resume my wind up back in the file cabinet.

There are three key aspects of the resume' that need to be captured on the first page, they are:
1. Your name centered at the top of the page in a bold, slightly larger font than the rest of the document.
2. Right below your name, in a font that will carry throughout the document, your title, or the one you are seeking.
3. Education. Don't elaborate just state degree, school, year graduated.
4. Affiliations. List professional organizations you belong to and any subcommittes you are a member of within those organizations.
5. Synopsis of work history. This should be a narrative in which you highlight and elaborate on the work you have done in the past. This is the place in which want to expound on what you can do. Just do not let it spill over onto the second page. What can then go on to the second page is your work history, by company, starting with the most recent. This is back up data that shows how long you were at each company.
